How Can Chiropractic Treatment Help Text Neck?

Written By Bentin Chiropractic Wellness Center on February 5, 2018

“Text neck” is a fairly new problem to people who spend long periods of time on their smartphones or other devices. While the name sounds humorous, text neck can cause very real, long-term problems.

Why You Should Seek Chiropractic Care for Text Neck

Text Neck can cause permanent damage to your spine, but seeking treatment from a chiropractor may help minimize these problems. You can also learn proper ways to stretch your head and neck, as well as tips on what you can do at home to combat Text Neck.

Don’t Ignore Your Symptoms

Many of us spend a great deal of time on our cell phones or tablets. Using this smart technology means we’re often sitting in a hunched-over position and looking down for long periods of time. This position often results in neck or back pain. What you don’t realize, however, is that it can also put too much strain on your spine. Over time, people can suffer from herniated discs or pinched nerves.

How Texting Becomes a Pain In The Neck

The human head weighs between 10 and 12 pounds. When you text, you bend your head down to look at your phone, causing a large amount of pressure to be put on your neck. In fact, the amount of weight put on your neck is equivalent to the force of 60 pounds.

This pressure on your neck can also spread to your central nervous system, causing pain to radiate out to your hands, legs, feet, and head.

How to Prevent Text Neck

Practicing good posture is an important way to avoid Text Neck. Keep your device at eye level, and avoid bending your head forward for an extended time frame. Whenever possible, work at a desk, and keep your computer raised so you neck stays straight.

It’s important to also take frequent breaks from technology. Get up every 20 or 30 minutes to stretch and walk around a bit. Your mind and your body will benefit from these little moments of respite.
